soccerAccording to the Chicago-based Children’s Memorial Institute for Sports Medicine, more than 20,000 high school girls suffer a serious sports-related knee injury each year in the United States.   For many of these women, year-round sports activity, multi-sport participation and an overuse of certain muscles, joints and bones are the primary reason for such injuries. The Injury Overview section of this website contains information regarding over-use. The knee, in particular, is a specific body part that tends to be injured more by females than males in high school sports injuries. Girls are up to seven times more likely to endure an ACL knee injury–injure their anterior cruciate ligament (ACL)–than boys in similar sports. Girls who play year round, high school soccer, volleyball and basketball are the most prone, however, the injuries cut across many other disciplines as well. This article discusses sports injuries in females; Dr. Peter Millett comments on knee injuries in female athletes.
